Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse Education Visit

Education

Overview

Book a free self-led visit to Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse and organise your day to suit your curriculum objectives. The gatehouse walls are wonderfully detailed and show the very early use of this kind of brick work, dating to the 1300s. Explore centuries of post-medieval graffiti on the back of the gatehouse, including a sketch of a ship, and encourage your students to ponder who may have been responsible for these carvings. Can your pupils find traces of the moat and imagine how the octagonal chapter house once looked?
