Overview

This guidebook presents a complete tour of Walmer Castle and its beautiful gardens, and, through site photography, reconstructions, maps, plans and features, it tells the story of the castle and its residents. First built as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defences, the castle in the early 18th century became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, among them William Pitt the Younger and Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who died here in 1852. A pull-out map provides visitors with a walk along the coast to Deal Castle and the site of now-lost Sandown Castle.
